Mugs Stump Award
Mugs Stump was one of the United States' most prolific and visionary climbers, best known for his first ascent of the Emperor Face on Mount Robson in the Canadian Rockies and for his brilliant Alaskan climbs.
Although he fell to his death in 1992 while climbing in Alaska, the spirit of this powerful athlete lives on in the Mugs Stump Awards program. Mugs Stump Awards are granted to small expedition teams tackling the great mountains of the world either as a first ascent, a significant repeat, or a first alpine-style ascent.
Mugs believed climbing was a celebration of boldness, purity, and simplicity. The grant recipients who are chosen must embrace his philosophy and climb 'fast, light, and clean.' Recipients are outfitted with breathable, windproof, and waterproof GORE-TEX® outerwear and high quality gear.
Gore is proud to be an integral part of an awards program dedicated to Mugs and the new generation of climbers that his memory inspires.
Applications for the Mugs Stump Award are due December 31 each year, and awards are announced in early February.
