The weather forecast for Friday 17th June in Chamonix: rain. A lot of rain. The reality early this morning: rain. More than a lot of rain. But outfitted with GORE-TEX clothing from Arc’teryx, Arc’teryx Alpine Academy participants were nonetheless in a great mood. So when it stopped pouring and slowed down to a drizzle, there was nothing left in the way for a beautiful day in the mountains.
As partners of the event, we still had tickets to give away for the alpine workshop. This is exclusive. The workshops have been sold out for months. Even more exclusive: GORE-TEX athlete Edurne Pasaban (the first woman to climb all 14 8,000 peaks) is coming to Chamonix to lead the workshop on Saturday. Our winners, Ryan and Siena, got their chance at this exclusivity today with the acclimatization workshop and a small tour on the Mer de Glace.
Around midday, the clouds parted for a view that would cause tingling in the fingers of any mountain climber: the Grandes Jorasses with her impressive north face and infamous tours like Pointe Walker and Le Linceul. These tours are mountaineering at its best, though almost impossible at the moment with the current snow and ice conditions.
Later on: The Laundry Party with Edurne. Wash&Care is a largely neglected topic, yet so important. The proper care of GORE-TEX clothing prolongs lifetime and ensures optimal functionality. At the Laundry Party (free and open to the public), mountain lovers can wash and (more importantly for water repellency) dry their clothes.
