Tell us a bit about your city’s climate. What are your three favorite spots - in the summer, in the winter (outside)? What is your favorite method of transportation and why? How do you prep for bad weather if you spend time outside?

Dundee, being the sunniest city in Scotland, still experiences its fair share of unpredictable weather, much like the rest of the country, where you can face four seasons in a single day, regardless of the time of year. My top three favourite spots in the city, whether it's summer or winter, include taking a leisurely stroll along the picturesque River Tay near the City Quay, ascending the Law Hill—an extinct volcano with captivating views, and exploring the enchanting Dundee Botanical Gardens. For me, the preferred mode of transportation is a bike, ideal for embarking on adventures along the River Tay or enjoying a train journey across the iconic Tay Railway Bridge, where you can witness breath-taking summer and winter sunsets. When it comes to preparing for inclement weather, I make it a habit to carry a trusty pair of GORE-TEX trousers and a jacket at all times, regardless of the weather forecast, given the unpredictable nature of Scottish weather.

What are you wearing today? Why are you wearing it, and did you have a particular weather scenario in mind when choosing this piece? What do you love most about your GORE-TEX product?

Today, I've opted for the combination of Mountain Equipment's Saltoro GORE-TEX pants and the Impellor GORE-TEX Jacket. As a seasoned mountain guide, this ensemble is a familiar and practical choice for my outdoor pursuits. What truly captivates me about the Impellor Jacket is its remarkable functionality and impeccable packability. Of course, considering Scotland's penchant for unpredictable weather, it's always wise to be prepared for anything nature may throw our way.

Where and when did you get this... Do you have any special memories connected to this item? If you could go anywhere, where would you like to take this piece?

I acquired these trousers approximately a year ago, and the jacket has been with me for about four years—relatively young in terms of outdoor gear. My trousers tend to see regular replacement, as I have a knack for developing holes in them, especially during those icy, crampon-clad mountain excursions in winter. However, I've taken exceptional care of my Impellor Jacket, except for those inevitable crampon encounters. Both these pieces hold a trove of memories. The Saltoro trousers have witnessed numerous thrilling ice climbs amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the French Alps. As for the Impellor Jacket, its most recent epic feat was accompanying me during the grueling Epic Ultra Sky Marathon, known as the Ring of Steall in Glencoe, Western Scottish Highlands. My next adventure takes me to Nepal, where I'll be visiting the world's highest lake, Lake Tilicho. Naturally, both of these trusty companions will be joining me on this extraordinary journey, ready to embrace new challenges and create more unforgettable moments.

Why do you think functional clothing has gotten more popular in recent years?

In essence, simplicity reigns supreme, rendering life more effortless, adaptable, and within reach. The beauty of it lies in the art of consolidating one's attire, allowing a single wardrobe to effortlessly transition across a spectrum of activities, regardless of their nature.

How do you define the term “comfort” in clothing, in particular technical apparel?

When defining comfort in technical apparel, my initial consideration is the sensation it offers when touched. The tactile experience is paramount, as it must evoke a sense of satisfaction. Beyond that, I delve into its adaptability across various environments. Technical garments must not only feel good but also provide a profound sense of assurance. Knowing that I can rely on the garment to deliver both comfort and security in diverse conditions is what truly defines comfort for me in technical apparel.

What are you looking for in the next six months and what challenges do you see that you’re excited about?

In the imminent future, Nepal beckons, promising an exhilarating adventure. Following that, my focus shifts to the winter mountain guiding season, a crucial endeavor where the safety and satisfaction of my clients are paramount. This endeavor seamlessly aligns with my deep appreciation for GORE-TEX, as I often find myself dispensing valuable clothing advice to those seeking to conquer the mountains. As the chill of winter descends, my workshop calls, presenting the challenge of carving amidst the frigid embrace of colder months. Keeping snug and cozy in the workshop becomes the key to unlocking my creative potential. Then, the horizons broaden as I chart courses to Mongolia and Tibet, where nomadic cultures and rugged mountain landscapes await exploration. These journeys will allow me to immerse myself in the timeless traditions of nomadic peoples while navigating the vast and breathtaking terrains of these remarkable countries. Yet, amidst these global adventures, I remain grounded in my homeland, Scotland. The quest for balance leads me to further explore the enchanting landscapes and hidden gems of this remarkable place, ensuring that my journey remains a harmonious blend of discovery both near and far.
