Run2 – My GORE-TEX Transalpine Run debut: the challenge of finding the right running shoes

Without a doubt, the most important part of our kit for the Run2 is our running shoes. Knowing which shoes are best for you is extremely tricky. During the winter months, I did all my running in GORE-TEX trail running shoes. The first style that I tried was the La Sportiva Akira GTX. It was good, although I have to admit that both my little toes weren't exactly happy. Then I tested the Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX. Unfortunately, they were no better (for my toes). In principle, they were both perfectly comfortable for trail running, but just not the right shoes for me for running longer distances. Next, I was allowed to test the newest GORE-TEX product technology for running shoes: the GORE® Invisible Fit™ technology. This pair felt just like normal running shoes, only they were also waterproof and breathable. As soon as I put it on, I noticed that the Merrell All Out Crush 2 was lighter than the other shoes that I had tested. It also turned out to be very comfortable to run in. And surprise, surprise: my toes were fine! However, I still decide to ask a professional what to look for when you’re after a pair that will perform well on the trail. The Laufbar in Munich [laufbar.de], which, in English, means “running bar”, offers its customers an in-store gait analysis service - something I'm interested in trying out. I test all kinds of different styles – from Salomon through Dynafit and La Sportiva to Innov8. I'm told to concentrate on cushioning, fit and running style. It soon becomes clear that the Salomon shoe is a good fit. But then, the second I put on the Innov8, I know that this is it. This is also the pair that I wear for the gait analysis during which I'm asked to run on the in-store treadmill while my leg movements are filmed from behind. The experts tell me that the shoe fits my style. So, off I go with my new Innov8 shoes – I can hardly wait to get out on the trail to test them. Although, for the time being, I'll continue to use the Merrell All out Crush for running in rain.
