Q&A with Tony Ferguson (@tonyferguson), Vancouver

GORE-TEX Studio: This one is getting harder and harder these days - but how would you describe yourself in 1 sentence max?

Professional skateboarder, footwear designer, entrepreneur, father.

GORE-TEX Studio: Tell us a bit about your city’s climate. What are your three favorite spots - in the summer, in the winter (outside)? What is your favorite method of transportation and why? How do you prep for bad weather if you spend time outside?

I live in Vancouver which is an oceanic climate where the summer months are nice and warm but the rest of the year is predominantly rain.

My favourite spot in the summer is probably skateboarding at the beach in West Vancouver, my favorite spot in the winter would be Whistler/Blackcom Mountain. Favorite Mode of transportation around the city is skateboarding.

In bad weather I definitely layer up and always have a GORE-TEX shell.

GORE-TEX Studio: Tell us a bit about your professional life and do you draw a hard line between private/professional? What were your most memorable moments professionally, your biggest achievements?

Along with a handful of other pro skaters as well as cinematographer Spike Jonze we helped start the Girl skateboard company in 1993.

I went pro in 1994 and rode for Girl for more than a decade before moving into the footwear industry. I feel very blessed and proud to have been a part of that era and the Girl skateboard company.

GORE-TEX Studio: What are you wearing today, why are you wearing it, did you have a particular weather scenario in mind when choosing this piece? What do you love most about your GORE-TEX product?

Today I am wearing the Supreme (Nas and DMX) GORE-TEX jacket. I’m wearing it today as there is a lot of rain in the forecast. I love GORE-TEX product because it’s waterproof, protects you from the elements, lightweight but also breathable which is great for skateboarding and snowboarding.

GORE-TEX Studio: Where and when did you get this… Do you have any special memories connected to this item? If you could go anywhere, where would you like to take this piece?

Supreme gave it to me a few months back. I have a special connection to it as Supreme has always been one of my favourite brands that I’ve been wearing since its inception in the early 90’s and Nas is my favourite rapper that I have been fortunate enough to connect with over the years. Both are iconic.

I would like to rock this piece on the slopes this season and take it to Whistler/Blackcomb, back country, etc.

GORE-TEX Studio: How do you define the term “comfort” in clothing, in particular technical apparel?

My definition of comfort would be something that is functional yet durable and is an extension of your style.

GORE-TEX Studio: Tell us about your current and upcoming projects… what are you looking for in the next six months and what challenges do you see that you’re excited about?

I just launched a project with Rone and the Ace Hotel. It’s a recycled slide that will be available in all their hotels. I am also working on a project with New Balance right now and have some really exciting projects dropping next year.
