It’s that time of year again: Once a year, a small group gathers in the Thalkirchner Strasse in Munich. Helli, Thomas Daniela, Paula, Daniel and Christian from Moving Adventures; Christian from Mammut; and my Gore colleague Andi and myself have something to do – watch outdoor films! Although now am annual routine, we’re always quite thrilled each year to see what’s new. Which films have been submitted by producers for this year’s E.O.F.T? Moving Adventures, Mammut and Gore have been organising this tour for 16 years. It has grown from having only a few hundred viewers at showings to now having more than 200,000. And today the E.O.F.T. is shown more than 300 times in 14 countries.
Enough with statistics. We’re here to talk about the new programme for the 16/17 season. Again this year, the jury proceeded very diligently. We want this next tour to be at least as successful as the last. As a reminder: The public’s favourite last year was “Line Across the Sky” about accomplishing the Fitz Roy Traverse in South America; “Unbranded,” about four cowboys riding across America on wild mustangs; and the profile of our GORE-TEX athlete Tamara Lunger. All three were also my favourites.
The line-up of films starts off with a kayaking film in a very remote and exotic region: What fantastic scenery! The jury is in agreement: This will fit very well into the E.O.F.T. programme. Film No. 2 is a story of climbing in the Himalaya. It tells the tale of two different generations and how they both approach this mutual project. Jury vote: A clear-cut yes! The third proposed film is a very emotional entry about wingsuit flying and base-jumping. Personally, I find it pretty heavy, and we’re all in agreement on this one that it too will fit into the new programme well. Film No. 4 is an adventure story about big wall free climbing in North America – a true classic for the E.O.F.T. The next film is all about mountain biking in various locales around the world. The submitted film consists only of various film clips that seem to be rather randomly tossed together. Since the film has not yet had its final edit, it’s difficult for me to make a decision. After a short debate, Moving Adventures says it will prepare a “rough cut”, in other words, edit all of the individual pieces together into one first version. Then we’ll make a final decision next week about whether it will be accepted into the final line-up.
I could of course list off a number of other films as I have above. Three hours of watching films – mixed with some controversial discussions about whether one fits into the programme or not – and we made a final decision: In the end, 90 per cent of our choices were unanimous. Of course, I won’t let on yet which films will be included. Take it from me, though: There is something there for every taste! It’s show time, or at least as of October 5th it will be. The new E.O.F.T. programme: selecting the films

Helli summarises the film submissions for the new tour in this way: “It is going to be a very personal E.O.F.T. programme with profiles of artists and performers”. But there are of course also humorous films on the slate, and the sports represented range from kayaking, climbing and biking, to wingsuiting and paragliding, to freeriding and steep skiing. All of this, more or less, in far-flung corners of Europe, North and South America and Southeast Asia.
