As the weather changes and we start to experience rain and snow in the eastern Sierras of Mammoth Lakes, California, there is no time like the present to get equipped with the gear needed to stay warm and dry while training. Ryan Hall ASICS runner The quest to find the right products has a new sense of urgency as I’m simultaneously preparing for the World Marathon Challenge—seven marathons on seven continents in seven days—which begins in Antarctica! I need to find winter running shoes that enable me to prepare for the extremes of the races to come. Though I do get excited about cooler running weather, I don’t look forward to slogging along in rain-soaked shoes that feel like bricks on my feet. When my feet get cold, they get stiff, and my footstrike becomes less efficient. All that water not only compromises my safety but adds unnecessary weight to every stride. Plodding along in cold, wet, heavy shoes is a nightmare. But I think I’ve found a dream product. ASICS running shoes with GORE-TEX liner The Asics GEL-Cumulus® 18 GTX® Shoe has been my answer when weather tries to hold me back. I’ve run in the cushioned trainer for years, including when I set the American record in the half-marathon and ran the fastest marathon in American history in Boston. It is a neutral shoe with adequate cushioning, yet rigid enough to keep me healthy from all the impact that comes with logging 140 miles a week. But to marry this shoe I already love so much with GORE-TEX liner is incredible. I remember getting my first GORE-TEX jacket when I was in high school and loving how it kept me warm, broke the pesky wind, and most importantly kept me dry. Needless to say, I’m happy to have the same innovation protecting my feet. Ryan Hall running in ASICS shoes with GORE-TEX liner The last thing I want is to forfeit a run to a little rain, snow, or poor road conditions, but the reality is that wet feet have given me terrible blisters in the past. I’m talking about the kind of blisters that peel easily and expose a raw wound that lasts for weeks. That’s why I’m pledging to #owntherun and fight back the weather and blisters that used to get in my way. Whether it’s a lap around the neighborhood or my upcoming race around the world, I’m committing to progress and you should, too.
